Astros' Michael Brantley Seeks Clarity From MLB Commissioner On Testing Lag

(SportsRadio 610) -- Another delay in COVID-19 testing results held Alex Bregman out of Astros' workouts and one of his teammates is calling on Major League Baseball to help fix the issue.

Bregman was the only Astros player whose results did not come back in time for Wednesday's workout.

It was the second time in three days the team had to adjust due to lagging test results. The Astros canceled team workouts Monday because results had not come back from the Utah-based lab hired by MLB

Astros outfielder Michael Brantley echoed players around the league who feel they need more clarity on how long it takes to produce these test results, and what can be done to make the process more reliable.

"Like a lot of players that are voicing their opinions, we kind of want answers," Brantley said. "We want to know how these test results are going to work out for us. Not having Alex here today was just another day he didn't get to prepare. As I read around the league of a lot of players voicing their opinion that we need our test results faster. We'd love to hear from (MLB commissioner) Rob (Manfred) and some clarity of how we're going to get this done because that's very important."

The Astros joined the Washington Nationals in canceling workouts Monday. The Oakland Athletics dealt with similar lags over the weekend and the San Francisco Giants suspended workouts at Oracle Park because of delayed test results.

Phillies outfielder Matt Klentak had not been in summer camp because his intake results were not received.

"We have such a short window to get ready," Brantley said. "Everything's coming quick and we're moving fast," Brantley said. "Just like today, Bregman couldn't practice because he didn't get his test results in. That's just another day he didn't have to prepare with his team, take groundballs and do the normal flow that he's used to doing."
