HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- Jack Mayfield will make his Major League debut when the Astros host the Chicago Cubs Monday afternoon following the purchase of his contract after placing Aledmys Diaz on the Injured List.
Mayfield, 28, was signed by the Astros after going undrafted in the 2013 draft. He's played in 617 minor league games, including 40 this season with Round Rock, where he hit .283 with 10 home runs and 31 RBI. He will bat sixth and play second base Monday.
Diaz is the third Astro in as many days to make a trip to the Injured List. He re-aggrivated his left hamstring in the first inning of Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Red Sox. He returned to the Astros lineup Tuesday after suffering a left hamstring injury May 17 in Boston, which cost him three games.
The Astros placed George Springer and Max Stassi on the Injured List Saturday and Sunday, but the team is getting closer to getting Jose Altuve back. He went 1-for-5 in a rehab game Sunday. He'll play for Round Rock Monday, and Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he might play a third rehab game before rejoining the Astros. He injured his hamstring on May 10.
