HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- Astros ace Justin Verlander underwent surgery on his right groin, the team announced Tuesday.
Verlander's first spring training start was delayed until March 3 due to right groin discomfort. He made two starts and allowed two runs in 4.2 innings, leaving his second start due to a lat strain.
"Initially, the hope was that physical therapy would be the proper course of action," Astros general manager James Click said in a release. "However, after a recent setback in his rehab, the medical staff recommended that a surgical procedure was necessary. The early prognosis is that Justin will be out for about six weeks."
The 2019 American League Cy Young winner was expected to be the Astros opening day starter March 26, but with the 2020 Major League Baseball season on hold due to the spread of the Coronavirus, Verlander may not have to miss a regular season start.
