Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is suspended indefinitely after Thursday night's altercation with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.
Both of the teams have been fined $250,000 and two players in addition to Garrett's suspension.
During a skirmish late in the fourth quarter, Garrett removed Rudolph's helmet, then swung and hit him in the head with it.
A brawl ensued.
Garrett is suspended at a minimum for the remainder of the season, the NFL announced Friday. He must meet with the commissioner's office before a decision on his reinstatement. Garrett was also fined an additional amount, though the league was not specific.
"Garrett violated unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules, as well as fighting, removing the helmet of an opponent and using the helmet as a weapon," the league statement says.
The Browns
released a statement on Garrett's behalf. Garrett said he made a terrible mistake and lost his cool.
"What I did was selfish and unacceptable. I know that we are all responsible for our actions and I can only prove my true character through my actions moving forward," Garrett's statement says."I want to apologize to Mason Rudolph, my teammates, our entire organization, our fans and to the NFL. I know I have to be accountable for what happened, learn from my mistake and I fully intend to do so."

November 15, 2019 Steelers offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey is suspended without pay for three games and fined an additional amount for fighting, which the league specifies as punching and kicking an opponent.
Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi is suspended without pay for one game and fined an additional amount for unnecessary roughness, which the league specifies as shoving an opposing player to the ground during an altercation.
"Additional discipline for other players will be forthcoming through the standard accountability process, including those players that left the bench to enter the fight area," the league statement says. "Under the collective bargaining agreement, the suspensions may be appealed within three business days. Appeals are heard and diced by either Derrick Brooks or James Thrash, the officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline."
