Only the Miami Dolphins have given up as many as the 10 Houston surrendered to the Saints and Jaguars over the past two weeks.
According to Wade, who watched the film after the game, only one sack was truly attributed to poor offensive line play.
Two of the sacks were on Deshaun Watson for not getting rid of the ball quick enough, Wade said.
On the fourth sack, Wade thought Watson gained half a yard on a scramble, but was given a bad spot. The stat sheet showed no gain, which counts as a sack.
"Nick Martin snapped the ball early one time, that sack counted against the offensive line," the retired offensive lineman said. "Two other sacks were blitzes to where they had more guys than the offensive line can protect. Quarterback is hot, he’s got to get rid of the ball. Those are on No. 4.
"But the offensive line was responsible for one sack. The offensive line didn’t play great yesterday. They didn’t play great. But they played pretty damn good.”
Wade was complimentary of Roderick Johnson, who stepped in at right tackle in place of Seantrel Henderson. He said Henderson made mistakes in Week 1 even rookies would not.
Rookie Tytus Howard also made his NFL debut, starting at left guard.
"The thing that matters is, what the defensive linemen in the other room, on the teams the Texans play against, are they going to look at the offensive line and say 'Man, these dudes are trash? We’re going to keep coming after them because we know they can’t pick it up.’ Or are they saying, ‘We’ve got to watch out for this guy because we really can’t get a rush on the left tackle because he’s pretty much shutting guys down. We’ve got to rush on the other side because this guy’s legit.’ Those are the things that determine wins and losses," Smith said.
When head coach Bill O'Brien was asked Monday about how Johnson and Howard performed, he said "they were decent" but could improve.
O'Brien said there are a lot of things that go into picking up blitzes, from the protection being more solid, or someone needing to break a route, or the quarterback needing to recognize it sooner.
"There's like 50 things that go into it and that's part of what I'm saying when I say that we have to improve," O'Brien said. "We definitely have to improve in some of those areas. That will be something we'll be working hard during the week."
