HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) - After returning from joint practices in Green Bay, the Houston Texans (0-1) hosted the Detroit Lions (0-1) this week before the first home preseason game at NRG Stadium.
Deshaun Watson started under center for the Texans' first drive of the game. Watson smoothly led the offense down the field, helped by a Lions penalty on fourth and one at the five-yard line, and found DeAndre Hopkins for a four-yard touchdown with 9:27 left in the first quarter. Watson went 5 for 7 and 60 yards, one touchdown, and rushed for 7 yards.

After the first drive, Watson and Hopkins were done for the night.

With the Texans backup QB AJ McCarron out for a thumb injury, Joe Web III took over under center. Late in the second quarter, Webb III hit wide receiver Vyncint Smith for a 31-yard touchdown and giving the Texans the lead with 0:57 left in the half.

Detroit held out many of their starters on offense, including QB Matthew Stafford. With Josh Johnson making the start at quarterback, the Lions found limited success against the Texans defense. Their first-half touchdown came off a returned fumble by Texans WR Steven Mitchell Jr. in the middle of the second quarter. David Fales replaced Johnson in the middle of the third quarter.

Webb III led the Texans on a thirteen-play 82-yard touchdown drive to begin the fourth quarter, with Buddy Howell punching it in for the score. Jordan Ta'amu replaced Webb III at quarterback late in the fourth quarter. Webb III was 14 of 25 for 168 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Ka'imi Fairbairn closed out the game with a 39-yard field goal to secure the first win of the 2019 preseason, 30-23.
