HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) - With a week passing in the NFL's franchise period, there has been little insight about the Houston Texans and Jadeveon Clowney's contract status with the team.
While we wait for any information about the current situation, former Houston Texans' wide receiver, Cecil Shorts III, joined Mad Radio on SportsRadio 610 and said the Texans offered Clowney a long-term contract in August 2018.
"I heard that last offseason, the Houston Texans offered him something and he wasn't happy with it, and he didn't give no thought to it," said Shorts III on Mad Radio. "He was like, 'Nah, I want bigger money than that.' That's what I've heard, and it comes from a pretty solid source."
When SportsRadio 610 host, Mike Meltser, asked if seemed that the contract offer from the Texans to Clowney wasn't fair, Shorts III replied, "Yeah. I think if you look at Clowney - he's a number one overall pick and what he thinks of himself, he's a pretty dang-good player. Does he deserve the Aaron Donald - Khalil Mack type of money, maybe not quite, but he's probably in that range for the disruptor that he is."
It is expected that the Houston Texans will place the franchise tag on Jadeveon Clowney on Tuesday and Cecil Shorts III believes that Clowney sitting out the entire season is an option.
"I'm not saying he's going to do it, I want that to be clear," said Shorts III. "What I am saying is that Jadeveon Clowney is thinking about all of his options. All of his options are on the table."
"I think he wants to ultimately get his big-time payday," Shorts II went on to say. "He's put the work in - the last two years he's been to the Pro Bowl. And he deserves, as he feels, to get that big-time check."
We'll hear from the Texans' general manager, Brian Gaine, at the 2019 NFL Combine on Thursday morning, 9:45am, with Mad Radio.
