Former Strake Jesuit track star Matthew Boling was named the fastest in the country last year when he set the record in the 100-meter sprint and won three gold medals at the UIL state meet.

Boling gained national recognition for his speed and is now a freshman at the University of Georgia.

On Tuesday, he was recognized as the High School Athlete of the Year at the Houston Sports Awards.

Boling said it was an honor to be among some of his favorite athletes, like J.J. Watt, who spoke after him.

It was a special moment for Boling when he realized Watt must have heard his speech.

"It was really cool. It was a big honor having so many great athletes there," Boling said.

When asked how much his life has changed since becoming a star in his own right, Boling said he's focused on his goal and has tunnel vision on getting better.
