HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Texans’ Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel spoke to the media for the first time since Monday’s loss to New Orleans on Thursday.

The bulk of the questions Crennel fielded had to do with the final drive of the loss to the Saints, and Aaron Colvin.  Crennel discussed the defensive strategy heading into those final moments.

“We were hoping to keep them out of field goal range, not let them kick the field goal to win the game, we weren’t able to do that, and they won.  We didn’t play it well enough, we didn’t play the situation well enough to execute the way we wanted to execute, and it didn’t work,” Crennel said.

The most criticized play of the six-play drive that led to the game winning 58-yard field goal was the fifth one.  2nd & 10 at the Houston 49-yard line.  Drew Brees connected on a 9-yard pass to Ted Ginn, in which Colvin was playing very deep on Ginn, and gave him even more cushion during the route.

Crennel’s answer to the question if that was by design was telling.

“Not exactly,” Crennel said candidly.
