Stoerner: Texans Could Not Afford D.J. Reader

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Nose tackle D.J. Reader is the latest Texans' departure.

Reader, 25, agreed to a four-year, $53 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to multiple reports. The price tag makes Reader the highest paid player at his position, a price that Clint Stoerner thinks was too steep to pay.

"With the problems this defense had last year, I cannot see where this organization can drop that kind of money at an interior defensive line position without it being a guy that can get to the quarterback," Stoerner said

The Texans drafted Reader in the fifth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft and had his best year in 2019 with career highs in sacks (2.5), tackles (52), and quarterback hits (13).

Brandon Dunn, Angelo Blackson, Carlos Watkins and Eddie Vaderdoes are currently players under contract that the Texans may turn to in order to fill the void left by Reader.
