O'Brien on Hopkins Trick Play Interception: 'Bad play call'

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Speaking to the media following the Texans home loss to Carolina, Texans’ head coach Bill O’Brien wasn’t pleased with the call that led to a DeAndre Hopkins interception.

“Bad play call. Bad play call,” O’Brien said when asked about the trick play inside Carolina’s red zone.

On a 2nd & 4 from the Carolina 18-yard line with 2:31 left in the 2nd quarter of a tie game,  O’Brien drew up a lateral to Hopkins that led to the star receiver attempting to throw a pass towards the end zone on the opposite side of the field.  Panthers corner back Ross Cockrell intercepted the pass that was intended for Carlos Hyde.

Cockrell’s interception would setup a 5-play, 54-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard Christian McCaffrey touchdown run to put Carolina ahead and they would never trail again.

“It was a play that we thought that we saw on film that the corner was going to run with the tight end across the field. During the play I threw it to Hop, and I peeked and the corner didn’t move,” Texans’ quarterback Deshaun Watson said.  “At that time I tried to wave my hand, but Hop was looking over there (the intended receiver), he didn’t see the corner, lobbed it and you live by the sword, you die by the sword.”
