(SportsRadio 610) -- With the help of Costco management, Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus provided enough food for the next few months for Houston-area children with disabilities.
Mercilus, through his charitable foundation, WithMerci, went on a shopping spree at Costco in Katy for Smartie Pants Academy, which serves food to nearly 40 children daily.
The school, which recently celebrated a decadeof service for children with disabilities, is a longtime partner of the charity.
The coronavirus pandemic has retailers enacting purchasing restrictions because supplies are limited. That's why Mercilus jumped into action.
"I am just doing what I am called to do," Mercilus told
the Houston Chronicle. "These children need the necessary nutrition to grow and be better, and if I have it in my power to do so, that is what I am going to do. I have seen first-hand the care that the children receive at Smartie Pants, so when the call was made I had to make sure I answered."
