HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- After back-to-back primetime wins, the Texans took the field Sunday with an opportunity at a third straight win with a chance to inch closer to an AFC South title.
But instead of taking advantage of a matchup against a 4-8 team with a rookie quarterback, the Texans let down.
"Bad day all the way around," Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said.
The Texans committed penalties and gave the ball away on offense, while allowing Broncos quarterback Drew Lock to look like the man who drafted him in just his second NFL start.
Before touching the ball in the second half, the Texans found themselves down 38-3 before mounting a flimsy comeback in the fourth quarter.
"They got up and it was hard for us to come back," Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson said. "We tried to. Just got to get back to the drawing board."
While dropping the Texans to 8-5 on the season, the loss brought back another Texans demon: consistency.
The Texans have won two straight games on four different occasions in 2019, only to fall back to earth the next week with three of those losses coming against non-playoff teams and two coming inside NRG Stadium.
"We're not consistent," O'Brien admitted. "I feel like we have a ton of consistent people on the coaching staff and on the team, but we don't play consistently. We have more wins than losses this year, but I think that's a fair criticism of this team. That's a reflection of the head coach. We've got to get the team to play more consistently."
With three games to play, the Texans find themselves in a tie for first place with Tennessee, a team they'll see next week in Nashville.
Regardless of what happens, the Texans will still control their own destiny going into the final two games of the regular season, but O'Brien knows in order to take a second straight division crown the Texans will have to play better and play more consistent.
"We've got a lot to work on. We've got a lot of football left, and we've got to get back to work."
