Texans Were Successful On 3rd Down, Red Zone and Goal Line Attempts Against Chargers

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) -- It was a successful day for the Texans in Los Angeles and the offense's efficiency in key situations was a big part of that.

The Texans converted on 60 percent of their third down attempts and all three of their red zone attempts. And at the goal line, Houston also converted its only attempt with goal to go.

The Texans completed just 6 of 15 on third down in the Week 2 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They were 1 of 2 in the red zone.

Trailing 17-7 at halftime, the Texans needed to make adjustments in order to start a comeback, especially after gifting Los Angeles a short field in the first quarter with a bizarre fumble by Watson.

They figured it out and made the necessary adjustments, outscoring the Chargers 20-3 in the second half.

"We just basically said the first half is over," quarterback Deshaun Watson said after the game. "I, on that first drop, spared them seven points throwing the ball backwards. It was a screen. Dude got hit on the pressure and he actually was supposed to be in the front. He was behind me. I was about to throw it and it was just all in a speed of motion.

"(Joey) Bosa was in front of me, hit my arm and it went backwards. We spared them seven, but outside of that we just had to find our groove after that and just continue to push forward. We came out of the second half and that's what we did."

The Texans face the Carolina Panthers at home next Sunday. Carolina will be without quarterback Cam Newton for the second straight week.

Former Houston Cougars quarterback Kyle Allen will start in Newton's place.

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien had not yet learned Allen would be starting, but he said Allen presents his own set of challenges for the defense.

"I think these quarterbacks that are backup quarterbacks right now have been trained very well," O'Brien said Monday. "They're coached very well. And when they get their opportunity, they go in there and you see that throughout the league. There's some guys that went out there (Sunday) and played really well and he was one of them."

#Texans fans, you won't see Cam Newton on Sunday. Likely Kyle Allen starting for the #Panthers. https://t.co/AibM3EaU6B
