HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes will meet as starters of their respective teams for the first time in their NFL careers.

Both quarterbacks were sought after in the 2017 draft as their respective teams traded up in order to select them.  The Texans traded up to the No. 12 pick for Watson, while Kansas City traded up to No. 10 for the pick to draft Mahomes.

In terms of accolades, Mahomes won the 2018 MVP in what amounted as his first full season as the starting quarterback after sitting behind Alex Smith in his rookie year.

"He's been doing a heck of a job putting the Chiefs in contention each and every game and putting up a lot of great numbers, because that's what he's been doing his whole career and just being that leader. He's doing a heck of a job for the organization," Watson said.

Watson was putting up MVP type numbers before he tore his ACL in his rookie year and then was selected to the Pro Bowl after 2018.

"In the quarterback's world, nothing is perfect, your pocket and everything, and can you make a play when everything is not perfect? (Watson) can do that, so if things break down, he can still make things happen. At the same time, when he's in the pocket he makes things happen, and their offensive line has done a nice job for him," Kansas City head coach Andy Reid said of the Texans' quarterback.

Watson and Mahomes have put up eye popping numbers as they've ushered in a new pass happy era in the NFL.  Perhaps the most astonishing stat is that Mahomes (112.4) and Waston (105.4) are first and second in career passer rating through a minimum of 20 games.

"I think it's tough to defend both guys, Deshaun and Patrick. I think that these guys are great players," Texans' head coach Bill O'Brien said.  "I think the way that they play the game and the way that they understand the game and their instincts for the game, they're both tough to defend."
