With Free Agency Looming, George Springer Stays Mum On Future

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (SportsRadio 610) -- With free agency coming at the end of the season, George Springer was asked after the Astros first full squad workout of 2020 if he wanted to remain in Houston long term.

"We've discussed a lot of things between me and my representation, and I think at the end of the day, whatever happens will eventually happen," Springer said Monday. "But it's way too early to make that decision."

Springer was drafted by the Astros in the first round of the 2011 draft, and while he wouldn't tip his hand about a possible contract, he did acknowledge how much the organization and city of Houston mean to him.

"The city has been great to me," he said. "I've pretty much grown up as an adult there. I've been in this organization since I was 21 years old, so this has been a very, very special to me. And again, time will have to tell, and I'll see what happens."

Complicating matters a bit is that the Astros hired a new general manager, James Click, two weeks ago. So it would be hard to imagine a deal getting done before the start of the season, but Springer didn't sound interested in that.

"I'm focused right now on playing baseball. I have a job to do, and I have an obligation to give 110 percent to this organization, to this city and the fans, to my guys. Whatever happens down the road happens, but it's way too early to make that decision."

After avoiding arbitration last month, Springer, who turns 31 in September, will make $21 million in 2020. He is one of three Astros outfielders entering a contract year, with Michael Brantley and Josh Reddick set to join him on the market in November.
