HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Texans defensive end Angelo Blackson is the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a field goal in Sunday's 24-21 win against the Tennessee Titans.
Blackson blocked Ryan Succop's 45-yard field goal in the first quarter from the Texans' 27-yard line. It was an important moment for the team, which was coming off a turnover in the end zone.
A.J. Moore recovered the blocked kick a the Texans' 23-yard line, preventing the Titans from scoring on their first offensive drive of the game.
The block marked the first of Blackson's NFL career and the first blocked field goal for Houston since Week 2 of the 2015 season at Carolina when DE Jared Crick blocked Panthers K Graham Gano's 53-yard attempt.
"Angelo did a really good job on that, along with the other guys up front, D.J. Reader getting some push," Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said Monday. "Angelo blocked kicks at Auburn. He's been able to do that. He's got good length, very strong guy, so it was a big play in the game."
Blackson, who helped Houston taking a lead in the race for the AFC South title, was one of two players to block a field goal attempt in the NFL in Week 15. He also recorded two tackles on defense against his former team.
The Titans drafted Blackson with the 100th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
The Texans signed him off the Patriots' practice squad in 2017.
"One, we like his size and his competitiveness," Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said Wednesday. "He does that and he shows up with the ability to make plays. So, I think he's taken advantage of the opportunities that he's been given and learning our system too. I think he's bought into our system and that allows him to be productive for us. So, he gets time as a result of that."
Blackson is also someone who is physically gifted enough to win at the line of scrimmage, particularly one-on-one, Crennel said.
It's something Blackson said he takes pride in.
"Definitely a lot. It's just one of those things where I do everything I can to help the team, so if I get a one-on-one block, I've got to win, if I get two-on-one I try to win," Blackson said. "Any way that I can to help the team win, that's what I'm going to do."
