Bill O'Brien Notches Deshaun Watson's 'Kick-In-The-Eye' Play Over Bills

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Deshaun Watson was never supposed to be in position to make the play he made against the Bills.

You know the one

It had Bill O'Brien saying "throw it away," and "look out" as the pass protection broke down.

A different play to DeAndre Hopkins was initially called, but Watson had to go away from it when he saw the Bills showing a zero blitz.

O'Brien's 14-year-old son Michael asked him Sunday where Watson's play to Taiwan Jones ranks in the great ones he's seen over his career.

Turns out, that might not even be Watson's most impressive play this year.

Remember when Watson thought he lost his eyeball against the Raiders?

That was the same game J.J. Watt went down for the season.

But it's also when Raiders linebacker Tahir Whitehead's foot found its way through Watson's facemask.

On the play, Watson put his left hand up to his face in front of his eye before throwing the ball to tight end Darren Fells in the end zone to give the Texans a lead late in the fourth quarter.

Watson was on the ground in pain after the play, but remained in the game with his eyeball intact, but swollen.

"I've seen some incredible plays. I'm very lucky. That was an incredible play. I think when you get kicked in the eye and you're able to complete a touchdown pass, I'm not sure that you can surpass that. I just think that play he made on Sunday was an incredible play and he's an incredible player.

"But when he got kicked in the eye against Oakland and he grabbed his eye and he really didn't know what was going on with his eye and he kept the play alive to complete a pass, that was a pretty cool play."

O'Brien said they have to do a better job coaching and executing the play they want, rather than relying on Watson to be great in that moment.

Bills cornerback Kevin Johnson, who spent four years with the Texans and two with Deshaun Watson as his teammate, was also very much aware of what Watson wanted to do against the coverage.

"That play should've been executed and coached a lot better. In the end, players make plays. He directed that play and then it didn't really go, obviously as planned, as to what what that play was supposed to look like. And Buffalo, give them a ton of credit, they had a good play there. I mean, they had two guys dead to rights on him and he made an incredible play."
