Stoerner: Texans Offensive Coordinator Tim Kelly Has Enormous Opportunity With Deshaun Watson

(SportsRadio 610) Can Tim Kelly handle the responsibility of developing Deshaun Watson in his fourth NFL season?

The opportunity is there for not only Watson to play at a high level, but for Kelly to burst onto the scene as a play caller in his mid-30s.

Former NFL quarterback Clint Stoerner said Kelly could set himself up for life as an offensive coordinator, if he's able to help take Watson's game to the next level.

There is a belief among football experts, Clint being one of them, that the Texans' offensive system has held him back.

Kelly is tasked with getting Watson better options against blitzes.

The Texans' offense improved from a league-high 62 sacks in 2018 to 49 last season, which was still eighth-worst in the league.

Yet whether Watson gets sacked often depends on the quarterback himself.

Sometimes he holds the ball too long. Sometimes he avoids the pressure and makes a spectacular play, like the one against the Raiders when he was kicked in the face, or the one against the Bills in the playoffs.

"I choose to believe that Deshaun Watson isn't given the answers, because in that particular play, Deshaun audibled. The play against Buffalo, he audibled to a go route and an eight- or nine-yard stop by a running back," Clint said. "That was your 'recognize pressure and give yourself an outlet'. That's a terrible outlet."
