Derek Carr and the first-team offense gave everyone a taste of what to expect with a long touchdown drive in the preseason opener, but fans will have to wait until Week 1 for any more.
The Saints starting quarterback and "several" starters will not suit up for the preseason finale against the Texans, said head coach Dennis Allen. He wouldn't go into specifics, but he said earlier this week that LB Demario Davis wouldn't play, and it's unlikely any players dealing with nagging injuries get on the field.
The same held true for Week 2 against the Chargers, where almost the entire first-team offense and defense sat after a handful of joint practices in L.A. This week will be more about players fighting for roster spots.
“I think it’s really important," Allen said. "There’s still a lot of decisions to be made. There’s still a good opportunity for guys to make a good impression. So I think it’s important for a lot of guys.”
The plan at quarterback will begin with Jameis Winston, then rookie Jake Haener will take over and finish out the game. In Week 2 it was Winston for the entire first half and Haener in the second half. The rookie out of Fresno State also played the entire second half in Week 1.
The Saints and Texans kick off at 7 p.m. for the only Sunday night game on this year's schedule.
