HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- While there is still no timetable on when he will be able to return from the strained quadriceps that his kept him off the field since June 16, Astros third baseman says he's making progress with his rehab.

"Ran today on the ground and not the treadmill for the first time," Bregman told reporters Monday. "Stressed (the quad) today at the gym and stressed it running, so we'll see how we react to that."

Bregman conceded he won't be able to return until after next month's All Star break, but he says he's ahead of schedule.

"It's tricky because I'm way ahead of where I thought I would be at this point, so taking it one day at a time, but recovering extremely well for how it was to begin with."

The Astros third baseman says his quad feels good enough to swing a bat, but he's refraining from doing so thus far.

"I'm not going to really swing until I'm running up to like 80-90 percent," he explained. "I don't want to create bad habits by swinging too soon. I've been down that road before where started to started to swing a little bit and it didn't really feel great mechanically after because I wasn't using my body how I'd like to use it."

Under the watchful eye of the Astros medical staff, Bregman's rehab routine is quite simple. He puts stress on his injured and then takes time off to see how it responds, and he did not think he would be this far along after only 12 days.

"I was pretty crushed at first, but real optimistic with how we're progressing."

Before suffering the injury, Bregman was batting .275 with seven homers and 34 RBI. He was named as one of the Astros seven All Star Finalists on Sunday.
