HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- X-rays on Yordan Alvarez's right knee revealed inflammation, and the Astros are awaiting results of an MRI, manager Joe Espada said Monday afternoon.
Alvarez left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels with what the team called a right knee contusion after sliding into second base on a third inning double. He was not in the lineup for Monday's series opener against the Seattle Mariners.
"I spoke with him this morning, and he woke up pretty sore," Espada said. "I was expecting him to, praying that he felt better, but that wasn't the case, so we'll see once we we get these results (of the MRI), once he walks in."
Espada said the MRI wasn't a result of what Sunday's x-rays revealed or how Alvarez felt Monday.
"We were gonna do it no matter what," Espada said. "We just want to make sure that we check all the boxes and we go deep in there and make sure that everything is fine."
Named to his third consecutive American League All-Star team, Alvarez is the Astros team leader in batting average (.305), home runs (35), and RBI (86) this season, while playing in a career-high 147 games.
