Astros option struggling José Abreu to spring training facility in Florida
Astros first baseman José Abreu has accepted an option to the team's spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, general manager Dana Brown announced Tuesday.
The Abreu option will take effect Wednesday, May 1.
"We met with José on this, and we both agree that this move will be good for him and for the team in the long run," Brown said in a statement. "We are confident that a change of scenery and a new environment will help him get his rhythm and timing back. José is a team-first guy, and we applaud him for this. We know what this guy can do, and we're confident in his determination and work ethic."
Abreu is slashing .099/.156/.113 for a sad OPS of .269 in 71 at-bats. He is by far the worst first baseman in baseball with as many plate appearances, according to fWAR.
The Astros will make a corresponding move prior to Wednesday's game.
