Astros rookie Cam Smith homers twice in 6-4 victory over Padres

Astros rookie Cam Smith homered twice to power Houston over the San Diego Padres in their weekend series opener Friday.

The Padres took an early one-run lead in the second inning before Smith answered in the bottom half with a three-run shot to left center field. The ball traveled 403 feet for Smith's second homer of the season.

But the 22-year-old wasn't done. In the fourth inning, with the Astros up 4-2, Smith hit his second homer of the game, this time taking advantage of the short porch Crawford Boxes for a solo shot to left center.

This was essentially the difference in the game, which Houston won 6-4. San Diego matched Houston with 12 hits, but it was the three-run blast in the second inning that tilted this one in the Astros' favor.

Ryan Gusto, making just his second big league start for Houston, gave up two earned runs on nine hits through five innings.
