HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- There was a feeling Astros third baseman Alex Bregman could be nearing a return after returning to Houston on Sunday from his rehab assignment with AAA Sugar Land, but that isn't the case. He will instead need a second rehab assignment, which team says isn't a cause for concern.
"We want to make sure he's ready to go, (and) he's not trying to find his rhythm or his timing when he's back up here." Astros manager James Click said.
Click said Bregman returned to Houston because the 20-day clock on his initial rehab assignment expired. He must wait five days before he can start a second assignment, so the plan is for him to rejoin Sugar Land on Friday.
"Ultimately, this was just a move that we had to make because of the way the rehab calendar works with Major League Baseball."
Bregman last played for the Astros on June 16 when he suffered a quad injury in the first inning of a game against the Texas Rangers. Hamstring discomfort forced him out of Sugar Land's game on August 1, but Click said Monday Bregman's quad and hamstring are fine.
"He's feeling great," Click said. "We're just going to make sure his timing's 100 percent back, his legs are 100 percent beneath him. He's been gone for almost eight weeks at this point, so when you're down for that long, sometimes it takes a little time just to get your rhythm back and your timing in the box. That's all we're working on at this point."
