After a forgettable three years away from Houston, Marwin González is coming home.

The Astros announced Friday afternoon they are signing the utility player and 2017 World Series champion to a minor league deal.

The move comes after González was designated for assignment earlier this season by the Boston Red Sox. González hit just .202, along with a pair of home runs, 14 doubles and 20 RBI in 77 games for Boston.

González brings back his versatility to an Astros squad which lacks positional depth. In his career, González has made 171 starts at first base, 116 starts at second base, 124 starts at third base, 259 starts at shortstop and 195 starts in the outfield.

His first seven Major League seasons (2012-18) were spent with the Astros. González batted .264 with 76 home runs, 292 RBI and a career .737 OPS in 795 appearances.

The best season of his career was clearly the 2017 World Series season, when González had career-highs in batting average (.303), on-base percentage (.377) and slugging (.530).

Perhaps his biggest moment came in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the World Series, when he hit a game-tying home off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen and propelled an extra-inning (11) victory for the club.

The success in Houston led to González signing a two-year, $21 million contract with the Minnesota Twins ahead of the 2019 season.
