Former Astros reliever and 2011 World Series champion Octavio Dotel has died after being caught in the collapse of a night club in his home country of the Dominican Republic, according to MLB insider Hector Gomez.

Gomez reports that Dotel was rescued from the rubble after the roof of the Jet Set night club collapsed sometime Monday night or early Tuesday morning but that he died while being transported to the hospital.

Dotel was one of at least 44 reported tragedies in the disaster as of Tuesday afternoon, with 146 more injured. He was 51 years old.

Dotel spent the final two seasons of his 15-year career with the Tigers and was a key part of the club's run to the World Series in 2012. He was injured early in 2013 and officially retired a year later.

Dotel pitched for 13 different teams in the majors, including the Astros from 2000 to 2004. He won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. He retired with a 59-50 record, a 3.78 ERA and 109 saves in 758 games.
