(SportsRadio 610) - It did not take long for the New York Yankees to enter the chat when it comes to signing free agent shortstop Carlos Correa.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters this week that the team has already had discussions with agents for Correa and Corey Seager, the two best shortstops available in a rich free agent class, as MLB Network's Jim Bowden reported.

The Astros leadership has said they plan to be competitive in retaining Correa, the now 27-year-old who the team drafted No. 1 overall in 2012. Both owner Jim Crane and general manager James Click have said re-signing Correa, or replacing him with another high level player is among the top offseason priorities.

Correa was extended a standard qualifying worth about $18.4 million, but that is mostly to ensure the Astros get draft compensation if and when he leaves in free agency. The more serious offers to Correa are five years, $160 million, according to Fox 26's Mark Berman, and six years, $210 million, according to KPRC 2.

Payne & Pendergast discussed the Yankees moving toward Correa and how unlikely it feels he returns to the Astros.
