Yordan Alvarez family to watch him play professionally for first time

(SportsRadio 610) - For the first time since Yordan Alvarez defected from Cuba in 2016, his family gets to watch him play professional baseball in person Tuesday night.

Alvarez's mother, father and brother arrived in Houston last Friday, according to the Astros, all made it to Minute Maid Park on Tuesday night as the Astros hosted the Minnesota Twins.

Alvarez originally defected from Cuba in 2016 and established residence in Haiti. On June 15, 2016, while Alvarez was in Haiti, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization as an international free agent.

Just two months later, before playing in a professional game, Alvarez was traded to the Astros in exchange for right-handed pitcher Josh Fields.

Alvarez made his MLB debut for the Astros in June 2019, and went on to become the unanimous AL Rookie of the Year that season (.327, 27 home runs, 1.067 OPS). Alvarez earned his first All-Star selection in 2022 and is among the AL leaders in home runs (31), RBI (79) and OPS (1.009).
