Rockets to sign Dillon Brooks, trade 4 young players

(SportsRadio 610) - The Rockets' perimeter defense improved significantly over the weekend when they agreed to sign former Memphis Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks.

Just a day after agreeing to a three-year, $130 million deal with former Toronto Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet, the Rockets also agreed to a four-year, $80 million contract with Brooks.

While new head coach Ime Udoka has stressed that jobs and minutes will not be handed out, VanVleet and Brooks are veterans making enough money to pencil into the starting lineup. Jalen Green, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun project to round out the starting five.

The Rockets agreed with center Jock Landale to a four-year, $32 million deal to provide depth at center. Jeff Green, now 36, is also signing with Houston on a one-year, $6 million deal. Green played for the Rockets in 2020.

Brooks, 27, is being acquired in an expanded sign-and-trade deal.

He averaged 14.3 points on 39.6 percent shooting last season.

The Rockets are also trading former first-round picks Usman Garuba, Josh Christopher and TyTy Washington, as well as young starter K.J. Martin.

Garuba and Washington are going to the Atlanta Hawks along with a pair of second-round picks. Christopher is going to Memphis as part of the Brooks sign-and-trade.
