Astros agree to deal with switch-hitting catcher Victor Caratini, ending Martin Maldonado's run: reports

(SportsRadio 610) - It was well-established that Yainer Diaz would be taking over for Martin Maldonado as the Astros' starting catcher in 2024. That meant it was likely that Maldonado, now a free agent, would be finding greener pastures elsewhere after six straight seasons in Houston.

It was confirmed Tuesday when the Astros agreed to sign switch-hitting catcher Victor Caratini to a two-year deal worth $12 million, multiple outlets reported.

As The Athletic's Chandler Rome notes, Caratini is 30 years old and could add some depth at first base when he's not playing catcher. He slashed .259/.327/.383 last season for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Caratini previously spent four seasons with the Chicago Cubs, one season with the San Diego Padres before the last two with Milwaukee.
