HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- Former Texans head coach David Culley praised his successor, Lovie Smith, is his first public comments since Smith was hired to replace him on February 7.

"Lovie will do a heck of a job," Culley said. "Lovie did a heck of a job while I was there. I'm rooting for him, I'm rooting for the Texans."

Culley was a guest of Rockets head coach Stephen Silas at Rockets practice on Tuesday. Culley said he and Silas talked throughout the football season and the two have a good relationship.

"During the season one time I called him up," Culley said. "He was going that losing streak and I called him up and just said 'Hey, stay the course, hang in there, I feel your pain', and I told him I have a lot of respect for your dad and I have a lot of respect for what you have done in your career, and just hang in there and stay the course."

Culley said he and his wife Carolyn have remained in Houston since the Texans fired him on January 13. He spoke to other teams during the winter, but his focus is on rehabbing from double knee replacement surgery he underwent on January 24.
