Texans QB Davis Mills gets contract extension through 2025 season: reports
Texans backup quarterback Davis Mills will be sticking around at least for the next two seasons after agreeing to a contract extension with the team.
Mills is signing an extension worth $5 million per year in new money through the 2025 season, according to NFL insiders Adam Schefter (ESPN) and Ian Rapoport (NFL Network).
The deal comes with less than a week until the Texans open the season Sunday visiting the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts. This was the final year remaining on Mills' rookie deal, which would have made him a free agent after the season.
Mills was the Texans' starter for the majority of his first two seasons after they drafted in the third round in 2021. He was the first draft pick by Texans general manager and executive vice president Nick Caserio.
The Texans drafted C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick in 2023, moving Mills into a backup role. But Mills was curiously bypassed last season for Case Keenum when Stroud missed time with a concussion.
With Keenum out due a season-ending injury and Mills signing a new deal, it's clear who the Texans' backup quarterback will be this season.
