'It's just Diggs': DeMeco Ryans talks Texans adding dynamic playmaker to wide receiver group
While the Texans still have not publicly introduced Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, there are still coaches and teammates singing his praises.
Diggs, now 30, is a two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler. He adds a different dynamic to a Texans offense which already had success passing the ball with Offensive Rookie of the Year quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans was asked at OTAs earlier this week what it's been like working with Diggs so far.
"It's been really fun working with [Stefon] Diggs," Ryans said. "You talk about a guy who's dialed in, a guy who loves football. It's been fun to work with him. It's been fun just to see the chemistry that starts to build in our locker room with him, our quarterback, the other receivers, offensive players, defensive players. He's going to be a really great fit with what we do here."
Not just a fit, but Diggs is a player who truly stands out. Opposing defenses will be in constant conflict trying to figure out who to cover between Diggs, Nico Collins and second-year receiver Tank Dell.
"When you talk about receivers with multiple skill sets that is what you want," Ryans added. "You want different body types, different type of movers to cause as many problems for a defense as possible, right? We want to put defenses in binds, and I think with those three guys it allows us to do that because they are so different, and they can all do different things.
"But at the end of the day, they are all explosive finishers with the football and that is what makes those guys great players. They can win on third down and they can finish and get in the end zone and that's what we look for at all skills positions on offense. So, having three receivers there, it definitely opens up the playbook for us and it puts a lot of stress on the defense."
So were they trying to add a new skillset to the wide receiver room, or was this just the type of player they could not resist pursuing?
"I think it's just Diggs," Ryans said. "Diggs has always said everybody sees what he can do and the plays that he's able to make so I am fired up to add him because he is such a dynamic play maker. He has many different skill sets but you put on the tape, this guy is a playmaker."
