Texans would love to bring back RB Devin Singletary, head coach DeMeco Ryans says

The Texans have at least 27 free agents from their 2023 roster, including 10 starters. Like every season, they will have to make business decisions about which players to bring back, and which ones to let walk away and replace.

One of those key players is running back Devin Singletary, who was the Texans' leading rusher last season on a one-year, $2.75 million contract. Singletary, who ran for 898 yards and accounted for 1,091 yards from scrimmage (carries and catches), is due for a raise. He should get it whether it's with Houston or somewhere else.

At the NFL Scouting Combine this week, Texans head coach was asked about a number of their free agents. Singletary, though, was who he specifically said the Texans would like to bring back.

"Yeah, very pleased with Devin," Ryans said. "I remember sitting in a free agent visit with Devin and just, man, his personality, his demeanor, it was a guy I knew I wanted to work with right away. Devin is made of the right stuff. He's a hard worker. He's a leader. He shows up every day in practice with a great attitude, and the guys around him feed off of that.

"So, Devin is a great guy. We'll see what happens in free agency, but we'd love to have Devin back just because of what he brought to our team. He was definitely a bright spot for us in that running back room."

Here is what general manager Nick Caserio said about Singletary the following day.

"'Motor' [Devin Singletary] had a great year, did a lot of great things for us," Caserio said. "'Motor' is a free agent. We'll see how it goes. There's a lot of good players that are out there. There's a lot of good players that are out there at a number of different positions, and our job is to evaluate, try to make good decisions."
