Deshaun Watson is playing his best football in Texans' worst moment

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Deshaun Watson feels like he's playing the best football of his career.

Watson is leading the NFL in passing yards per attempt (8.8), ranks third in completions of 20-or-more yards (30) and is top 10 in passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage.

Watson has posted five consecutive games with multiple touchdown passes, which ties the longest streak of his career.

"Honestly, yes. I am," Watson said Wednesday when asked whether he's playing the best football of his career. "As far as just being the quarterback and being efficient, I think this is the best I've felt as far as just getting the ball out, staying ahead of the chains, being able to distribute the ball and just kind of getting around and just the feel.

"Honestly, these are the best numbers I've had over my career. Who knows what my rookie year would have been like if I wouldn't have gotten hurt. But yes, I've felt this is the best football I've been playing for a while."

Watson started six games in his rookie season before being sidelined with a torn ACL. But those six games were electric. He threw for 19 touchdowns on 1,699 passing yards and eight interceptions.

Watson also ran for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

It's difficult to accept the Texans being 1-6 with a quarterback of Watson's ability.

But the Texans have struggled to run the ball effectively with David Johnson and their interior offensive line.

The Texans have the NFL's least efficient running game, according to Football Outsiders.

Their defense is bad against the run, and not much better in the passing game.

Only five run defenses are less efficient, and their pass defense ranks 23rd in efficiency.

Watson echoed defensive end J.J. Watt about not wanting to rebuild the team, but they have a long way to go in digging out of this hole -- with a scarce number of draft picks and limited money under the salary cap, and a new general manager and head coach coming soon.

"Of course I want to be involved in the process, being the franchise quarterback with what the organization, what we want to be here exactly, the foundation and the people that's going to be running this team and this organization along with the players and myself being the quarterback," Watson said. "Of course I want to make sure that we're all on the same page and good energy and things like that, and we're clicking the right way. Of course you're going to hear rumors and things like that, so I just stay focused on my task and what I can do and communicating with people. I'm just here trying to find ways to win games to try to turn the season around.

"Then the whole coaching change and new GM and things like that, of course I want to be involved. But right now, my main focus is trying to turn this season around and try to get some wins and try to make a push. Definitely want to focus on that."
