(SportsRadio 610) -- Texans first-year head coach David Culley referenced the 2021 roster as "a brand new football team" multiple times when he met with media over the weekend.
The Texans could very well have more new players on their team when the 2021 NFL season starts than any other team.
General manager Nick Caserio, in his first season constructing the team, has turned over more than half the roster, and Texans insider John McClain projected last month there could be a 70 percent turnover rate by the time the rosters are reduced to 53 players shortly before the season begins.
If you're a reasonable person looking at the trajectory of this team over the next couple of years, don't expect them to win a lot of games.
It is, effectively, like an expansion team. In The Loop's John P. Lopez compared them to the inaugural 2002 squad well before the draft.
When McClain asked Culley how important it is to assess rookie quarterback Davis Mills this season to inform decisions in next year's draft, the head coach deflected a bit to stress how early in they are in this process.
"We're looking at it like there's going to be competition at all positions," Culley said. "This is a new football team here. Basically, we've created competition all around this football team. Not just at the quarterback position, but basically at all positions. That's why you see so many guys on this football team right now that haven't been here. We're going to let things play out in training camp. We're going to go from there and then the best players that give us the best chance to win are the ones we're going to be put on the football field regardless of position."
