(SportsRadio 610) - The NFL Draft is just under one month away and the Texans find themselves in much different position than the previous two years.
For the first time since 2019, the Texans have a first-round pick. Not only that, they pick No. 3 overall, and acquired the No. 13 overall pick by trading quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns.
Texans general manager Nick Caserio has been open about being willing to trade the No. 3 pick, but that was mostly before he had No. 13 as well.
Hall of Fame NFL insider John McClain joined Payne & Pendergast on Wednesday morning for his weekly visit and noted the Texans' particular need at safety, especially after losing Justin Reid to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency.
McClain has long been a proponent of drafting Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton at No. 3 and he made his case here with P&P:
"Of all the positions they have right now, running back is the most destitute but you're not going to take one in the first round," McClain said. "They need a safety desperately. If they started right now, it would be Eric Murray and M.J. Stewart and Jonathan Owens. They're desperate for a safety.
"Yes, they need a pass rusher opposite Jonathan Greenard. But they're not desperate. And yes, they could use another offensive lineman. ... There's just all kind of ways (Caserio) could go. But I hope he doesn't trade (No. 3) because he can get an impact player, at least on paper."
