McClain: Texans would be stupid to trade Lonnie Johnson Jr.

In a surprise report Friday afternoon, news dropped the Texans are possibly shopping pass rusher Shaq Lawson and safety Lonnie Johnson Jr.

Lawson makes sense, given the fact he has not flashed much at training camp or in the first two preseason games.

But Johnson?

It seems a bit early to give up on Johnson, or to sell the final two years of his rookie contract.

The Texans moved Johnson from cornerback to safety last year, after a rough rookie season at corner. But he's shown promise at safety at camp, and had a pick-6 last week against the Dallas Cowboys.

Shortly after the news dropped, Hall of Fame Texans insider John McClain joined Clint Stoerner and "The Show" with his thoughts on the report.

"(The Texans) would be stupid to trade Lonnie Johnson," McClain said. "They've got Eric Murray and Justin Reid as the starters. Lonnie is the No. 3 safety who has been, in practice, as good as any player. And he had that touchdown last week. Why would they trade the guy? It makes no sense to me.

"Now Shaq Lawson, I don't think he's going to make the team. ... I think they're trying to trade him before they cut him."
