(SportsRadio 610) -- Texans rookie defensive tackle Roy Lopez has shown up in a big way at training camp.

The sixth-round pick out of Arizona stands out with his ability to bull rush an offensive lineman, snatch him down and jet past him toward the quarterback. Lopez had a few examples of that in the first two padded practices.

What I have also noticed about Lopez is his really good sense and feel for how a run game is developing. Sometimes rookies will have a tendency to overrun plays, or to throw a guy out of the gap to early.

Lopez doesn't do that.

I think he can have a role on this defense.

Here is what Texans defensive coordinator Lovie Smith said about Lopez on Wednesday:

"He's flashed is what he's done. He will be playing the nose guard position for us, but he's a nose guard with a little bit of three technique athletic ability because he has a little bit of wiggle to him also, strong, compact. He's done some good things. You need to be bringing young players up through the system. Like what he's done so far."
