(SportsRadio 610) - Pep Hamilton has a challenge ahead of him as the Texans' first-year offensive coordinator.
Hamilton, who was promoted from quarterbacks coach to coordinator with the hiring of Lovie Smith as Texans head coach, replaces Tim Kelly as the offensive play caller.

It's a phase in which most improvement is needed for the Texans, who ranked 30th in offensive DVOA last season, which measures efficiency, according to Football Outsiders.
Smith, Hamilton and general manager Nick Caserio, who sits in the booth with a headset and describes himself as "a conduit" between the coaches and what's happening on the field, were fairly tight-lipped about how the offense would look under this coaching staff.
"The Houston Texans offense is going to be, ultimately, an offense that accentuates the strengths of our players and our players," Hamilton told In The Loop on Tuesday. "We're going to add players to this roster. To sit here and say today we're going to go in and run a spread, or an I (formation), or an empty (formation). You just don't know.
"It's just as much about the cogs and the pieces as it is about philosophically what it is you want to do. ... When you look at the league and the way it's trending, this is an offensive league."
Hamilton, Smith and Caserio will collaborate as a staff to establish their offensive philosophy. The goal, obviously, is to put second-year quarterback Davis Mills in the best position to be successful.
To that point, Hamilton acknowledged it's more than just the quarterback for team success.
But he said Mills is an underrated athlete who can move around the pocket and extend plays. What he wants to focus on anticipation and accuracy this offseason.
"We'll spend just as much time trying to gain a better understanding of what the opponent is trying to defend and do to us, which is going to help him eliminate confirmation hinges and eliminate trying to be sure before he pulls the trigger, if that makes sense."
So, all we learned about the offense for now at least, is that Mills is likely to lead it. And they want Mills to succeed. Hamilton has been following Mills' development since he was a high school prospect in Georgia, so he has a keen understanding for what he's capable of.
Let's see who the Texans bring in to surround him.
Houston also had some other offensive coaches to replace, with line coach James Campen leaving for the Carolina Panthers and receivers coach Robert Prince to the Dallas Cowboys.
NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported Monday afternoon they would hire George Warhop (most recently with Jacksonville Jaguars) as offensive line coach, and Hal Hunter as assistant offensive line coach.
