HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Romeo Crennel is the Texans' interim head coach for the remainder of the 2020 season after CEO Cal McNair fired Bill O’Brien from the position.
Crennel, 73, has worked with the Texans as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator since O’Brien was hired in 2014.
Crennel has head coaching experience with the Cleveland Browns (2005-2008) and Kansas City Chiefs (2011-2012).
McNair released a statement Monday afternoon saying the team is going in a different direction after O’Brien compiled a 52-48 record through 6 ¼ seasons.
The Texans won four AFC South titles under O’Brien, but never reached a conference championship game.
“We have a talented team and I have no doubt our players and staff will rally to make Texans fans proud as we aim to win championships and do great things for the city of Houston,” McNair’s statement said.
O’Brien signed a contract extension in 2018 that runs through 2022, so the Texans will continue paying him for the next couple of years.
McNair told SportsRadio 610 the only thing changing is Crennel replacing O’Brien for now.
Jack Easterby will remain the top executive for football operations. Anthony Weaver will continue to be the defensive coordinator, and Tim Kelly as the offensive coordinator.
The Texans are 0-4 after losing at home to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
