(SportsRadio 610) -- The Texans activated veteran backup quarterback Josh McCown from the exempt-commissioner list and his first day with the team will be Friday.

McCown was signed by the Texans from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad last week, and had to clear COVID-19 protocol before he could join the team.

Texans offensive coordinator said Thursday he’s spoken with McCown and looks forward to getting to know him even more.

“Obviously, you look at his career and all the different schemes he’s been in, the players he’s been around, the coaches he’s been around, he’s got an unbelievable amount of knowledge that we’re going to look to learn from," Kelly said. “And again, we’re going to get him ready to go out there and learn our offense also. Looking forward to getting him in the building so we can start to work together.”

McCown, 41, signed a two-year deal with the Texans, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Texans interim Romeo Crennel last week called McCown “an excellent third option” behind Deshaun Watson and A.J. McCarron.

With the NFL reporting 15 new positive COVID-19 tests for players and 41 for other personnel between Nov. 1 and Nov. 7, depth is important at every position, but especially quarterback.

Until now, McCown had been serving in a similar emergency role for the Eagles.

“Basically, when you look at the situations that are going on around the league and basically on this team, when you lose a player,” Crennel said. “And knock wood and thank goodness it hasn’t been a quarterback. But just in case, if we lose a quarterback to the virus, now then we have a proven, experienced guy in the on-deck circle or in the bullpen so that we can pull from that guy.

“He has a tremendous amount of experience. He’s seen a lot, done a lot. His home is not far from here, so it’ll be good for him to be back in the area. I think that his experience in that quarterback room will be valuable as well.”
