Texans claim safety Kareem Jackson off waivers from Broncos

(SportsRadio 610) - A former Texans first-round draft pick is back with the team.

The Texans claimed safety Kareem Jackson off waivers from the Denver Broncos, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

Jackson was a first-round pick by the Texans in 2010, when they selected him 20th overall from Alabama. He played nine seasons for the Texans, eventually switching from cornerback to safety. Jackson has spent the last five seasons with the Denver Broncos, but was let go after a series of fines and suspensions for illegal hits.

The Texans could use some help in the secondary, especially at safety. Veteran Jimmie Ward has struggled to stay on the field due to injuries, while second-year safety Jalen Pitre was benched in Sunday's loss against the Cleveland Browns.

Ward was placed on the injured-reserve list, effectively ending his season. He signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the team this past offseason. He carries a cap hit of $8 million in 2024.
