Texans cut QB Jeff Driskel, RB Buddy Howell, CB Shyheim Carter

In an effort to reduce their active roster to 53 players, the Texans cut quarterback Jeff Driskel, running back Buddy Howell and cornerback Shyheim Carter on Monday, according to multiple media reports.

Driskel was brought in this offseason to compete for the backup quarterback spot behind presumed starter Tyrod Taylor. Driskel competed in training camp and the preseason with rookie third-round pick Davis Mills.

Even as the rookie struggled with turnovers in practice and preseason games, Driskel failed to distinguish himself as an adequate backup option.

Still, if he clears waivers, Driskel is a candidate for the Texans' practice squad, according to longtime NFL writer Aaron Wilson.

Howell and Carter were cut after falling on the depth chart at their respective positions. Howell impressed at camp, but between veteran newcomers Phillip Lindsay, Mark Ingram and last year's starter David Johnson, running back spots after that would be hard to come by.

The Texans also signed veteran back Rex Burkhead to compete for a job, adding to an already crowded running back room.

Carter, who had an interception against Cowboys' backup Ben DiNucci in the Texans' second preseason game, is another candidate for the Texans' practice squad if he clears waivers, per Wilson.
