The backups, however, were effective. Rookie running back Dameon Pierce ran for 20 yards on his first carry of the game. He finished with 49 yards on five carries and the 20-yard scamper was the longest of run of the game by either team.

Driskel's touchdown passes came on a short four-yard jump ball to Jalen Camp in the second quarter, then a game-deciding six-yard throw to Johnny Johnson III at the end of the game.

Defensively, cornerback Tremon Smith's interception in the first quarter set up a short field for the Texans' first score, a 49-yard field goal by Ka'imi Fairbairn. There were also forced fumbles by safety Jonathan Owens and linebacker Tae Davis.

Blake Cashman and Jalen Reeves-Maybin led the Texans with seven total tackles, while Derek Rivers had a team-high two sacks.

The Saints scored a touchdown on their first drive of the game, marching it 67 yards on 10 plays in 7:12, following the Texans' 3-and-out.

From there, New Orleans only managed a couple of field goals: a 23-yard try by Wil Lutz in the second quarter, then a 36-yarder by John Parker Romo in the fourth quarter.
