Texans GM Nick Caserio not putting 'unrealistic expectations' on quarterbacks

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- There is not a bigger focus on the Texans' remaking their roster than what happens at the quarterback position.

Deshaun Watson's future with the team is uncertain and the third-round selection of former Stanford quarterback Davis Mills along with signing Tyrod Taylor and trading for Ryan Finley in the offseason make it reasonable to assume Watson's days in Houston are numbered.

Taylor seems to be the likely starter, but what can fans expect to see from Mills?

Texans general manager Nick Caserio spoke to reporters Monday at a charity golf tournament and was asked about the timeline to bring along Mills, and how he feels about the team's quarterback position.

"No different than any other player," Caserio said. "Bring him in, teach him our system, teach him our terminology, take it one step at a time. Again, different players are going to be able to absorb more information than others, some can learn it quickly and move on to the next thing. Each player is going to be different. Each learning progression is going to be a little bit different, so part of our job as coaches is to get a feel, 'OK, this is too much. This guy, you can load his bucket a little bit.' That's the teaching component and then when you get on the field, again, it's about fundamentals and it's about a foundation. It's not about Xs and Os at this point.

"We're early in the offseason program" he added. "It's a teaching time of year. So, the next phase will be Phase Two, so that will entail some other things. Again, we'll take it one step at a time. We're not going to put any unreasonable expectations on anybody. It's kind of a waste of everybody's time. It's how do they improve? Can they make adjustments? What do they do one day? OK, can they stack multiple days together? Look, they're going to have setbacks. You're going to go out there, you're going to have a bad play. OK, how do you respond to that? Can you make the adjustment? Do you understand why that happened? Those are the types of things right now that are really important."
