Could a familiar face in the AFC South become the next head coach of the Houston Texans?
Former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell was brought in for an interview with the Texans on Monday.
The Texans have been competing under interim head coach Romeo Crennel since Week 5, as former head coach Bill O'Brien was fired after an 0-4 start. Crennel has led the Texans to a 4-6 record since that point, though they have currently lost their last three to the Colts, Bears and Colts (again).
Caldwell is a guy who knows the Colts pretty well, working his way up from quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach to become the team's head coach from 2009 to 2011. His debut season was one of the best for a head coach in league history, though his 14-0 start and eventual AFC Championship ended in a Super Bowl loss at the hands of the Saints. Just two seasons later, following a devastating injury to Peyton Manning, the Colts went 2-14, marking the end of Caldwell's Indianapolis tenure.
He was relatively successful in his stint with the Lions fro 2014 to 2017, compiling a 36-28 record, though his 0-2 postseason record and lack of runaway success was ultimately his undoing.
"We didn't beat the real good teams," recently-fired Lions GM Bob Quinn said following Caldwell's dismissal. "Our record was above average. We're 9-7 the last two years, but our record against the better teams in the league has not been that good."
Most recently, Caldwell served as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach of the Miami Dolphins, and his plethora of experience working with quarterbacks should be an attractive factor considering the Texans' $156 million investment in Deshaun Watson.
