HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- No permanent head coach.
No general manager.
The record is 1-6 and despite no major activity at the trade deadline, the Texans were viewed as sellers going into it.
Still, their top two players are not looking to rebuild. J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson still want to salvage what’s left of this season, despite slim chances of making the playoffs.
The two of them are in different stages of their career, but neither seems to believe the Texans’ future is as bleak as it looks at the moment.
“I don’t think it’s any secret that I don’t have 10 years left in this league,” said Watt, who turns 32 in March. “I personally believe that I do have a few more great ones left in me. But I’m not looking to rebuild. I’m looking to go after a championship and that’s what I want to do. Whatever is in the best interest of the Houston Texans, that’s in the best interest of myself.
“I’m interested in winning a championship in this league. That’s every player’s goal.”
Watt has said before that whatever direction the Texans go in, it needs to maximize Watson as the future of the franchise.
Watson himself said he wants to be involved in the team building process, but he agrees with Watt on not wanting to hit the reset button.
“I don’t view it as rebuilding because every year is a new year,” Watson said Wednesday. “Every year is a new year. It’s a new team, people are going in and out. People are getting traded. People are going to sign different contracts in free agency, coaching changes, all types of different things. So, it’s just a stepping stone that we’re just figuring out the right pieces to the puzzle. Every year, every team is doing that. …
“I agree with J.J. I don’t want to sit here and change everything. But I do want to win the championship eventually. We’ve got a long way to go and we’ve got a lot of work to put in. So, that’s our main focus. But right now, we’re just trying to win one game at a time and try to flip this season around.”
