A lot is expected of the Texans' defense this season and two key pieces of the puzzle are second-year defensive backs Kamari Lassiter and Calen Bullock.
Lassiter, who was drafted in the second round last year, became a day one starter and immediate impact player for the Texans. Bullock was a third-round pick who made the most of his early opportunities and by the end of the season he was one of the defense's top impact players, matching All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.'s five interceptions.
They appear to be locked in and ready to take their games to an even higher level in year two, based on this feature by Jonathan Alexander in the Houston Chronicle.
"To be honest, we'd be here all day if I wanted to tell you every single thing that I've been trying to work on," Lassiter said at voluntary OTAs on June 3. "I just want to become a better player, inside and out. From understanding what's going on pre-snap, understanding offenses better, understanding where my help is better, understanding route recognition or doing the little things that can make me more successful, watching other players play, it's a lot of things that I really want to work on. I can't tell you everything, because I'd be here all day with you."
A week later, Bullock also spoke about becoming a better student of the game.
"Play recognition and knowing what to expect on certain down and distances so I could go out there and play faster instead of just going out there and playing my athleticism," Bullock said when asked about where he wanted his game to improve. "I wanted to be a student of the game and really take advantage of all my opportunities. There's a lot of plays out there that I left on the field that I felt that if I would have made I would've been in the conversations with the top safeties that everybody talks about."
